Top waterfalls in and around Vientiane Capital

Hello everyone! For those who are planning a relaxing getaway but don't want to travel too far... I have some beautiful destinations to recommend, located right within and around our capital city! Neither too close nor too far! They are absolutely perfect for anyone seeking a fresh and rejuvenating natural atmosphere. We are talking about… 5 stunning waterfalls you definitely shouldn’t miss! Let’s go check out where they are.

1. Tad Moun Waterfall

Overall, this is a charming, seasonal small waterfall that offers interesting activities such as trekking and cycling. Tad Moun is surrounded by a wide variety of lush trees, providing a genuinely natural feel. It also features local pavilions where you can chill, sip a cold beer, and chat with your friends, partner, or family, allowing you to fully absorb a wonderful holiday vibe. Recommendation: According to visitor reviews, visiting around May is the best time, as it perfectly complements the warm weather and makes playing in the water a lot of fun. However, visiting in December is not recommended due to low water levels. How to get to Tad Moun Waterfall: Located in Sikhottabong District. Drive out of Vientiane city center towards Km 10 to join Route 13 North. As you continue driving, you will see a sign on the right-hand side for Tad Moun Waterfall. From there, turn left onto the concrete road and drive for another 7-10 kilometers to reach the waterfall.

2. Hinkhanna Waterfall

This is another perfect spot for a picnic or a relaxing meal while immersing yourself in nature. You can bring a mat to spread out and dine right by the water's edge. The area features several local pavilions with corrugated iron roofs, offering a distinctively different atmosphere compared to standard wooden riverside huts. Recommendation: If you prefer to travel light, there's no need to worry. The site offers convenient guest amenities, including a diverse menu of local food, inner tube rentals for swimming, and much more. How to get to Hinkhanna Waterfall: Located in Naxaythong District. Drive along Route 13 North to Km 15, where you will see a signpost on the left-hand side. Turn left and drive for another 10 kilometers to reach the waterfall.

3. Tad Vangluang Waterfall

This is another highly popular spot, highly recommended by many travelers who have checked in here. It is perfect for true nature lovers, as everywhere you look is filled with lush, vibrant greenery. The highlight is a long bridge stretching across the area, which is great for a scenic stroll or taking photos, and there is also an exciting zipline activity to enjoy. Recommendation: Swimming is permitted, but fishing is strictly prohibited; violators will face a fine of 10,000,000 LAK. How to get to Tad Vangluang Waterfall: Located near Veunkhabao in Pakngum District. Drive along Route 13 South for about 60 kilometers towards Pakngum District, then continue for another 2 kilometers. After crossing the bridge, you will see a large promotional signboard for the waterfall.

4. Kaeng Nyui Waterfall

This destination is often described as Vientiane province's emerging new waterfall gem in Vang Vieng district. Its defining feature is its steep, dramatic height, with cascading waters flowing down in distinct tiers over a long stretch, creating a magnificent view. Imagine the breathtaking atmosphere of water rushing down from above with refreshing mist scattering all around—it is incredibly photogenic!! Additionally, it offers trekking and hiking trails tailored perfectly for adventure enthusiasts. Recommendation: For those going on the trek, you will eventually reach a spot with a smaller waterfall and a natural pool suitable for swimming. We highly recommend stopping there to chill, breathe in the wonderful natural air, and rest before continuing your journey. Also, do not forget to bring a waterproof bag with you; as you get closer to the main waterfall, there will be a lot of heavy mist, and you wouldn't want your beautiful and expensive DSLR camera to get soaked. How to get to Kaeng Nyui Waterfall: Drive along Route 13 North into Vang Vieng town. Pass the old airfield and turn right at Phonpheng Primary School, then head straight towards Naduang Village (from Phonpheng Primary School to the Kaeng Nyui Waterfall sign is about 3 kilometers). Continue driving just a bit further, and you will see the sign for Kaeng Nyui Waterfall on the right-hand side. Turn and follow that path for about 1 kilometer to reach the destination.

5. Tad Phak Soy Voy Waterfall

Overall, the atmosphere is similar to other waterfalls, but a distinct highlight is the way the water flows down from a steep, high cliff over massive boulders. Looking at it, you get the vibe and feel of a striking, solitary waterfall completely unobstructed by trees. Recommendation: For those who enjoy walking along rocky riverbeds, sitting chilling by the water, or perhaps setting up a nice picnic lunch, Tad Phak Soy Voy Waterfall is an excellent alternative that you should definitely visit. How to get to Tad Phak Soy Voy Waterfall: Located in Nakhanthoung Village, Xaythany District, Vientiane Capital, approximately 50 kilometers away from the city center. Drive along the Thangone-Bankun road, then turn right at the intersection towards Pakngum District and continue for about 23 kilometers.
